| Home Remedy for Colic
Over and above
the traditional store-bought remedies for colic, there
are some
excellent home remedies for colic as well. Since home remedies for
colic are completely natural, it's usually a good idea to try some of
these first. However, they are
sort
of hit and miss – and what works for others might not
work
your child. Still, all of these colic home remedies have worked for
some, why not for you? Give it a try!
Massage. This simple word can spell magic
on your baby’s tummy, if done according to the instructions. If the
colic is due to gas formation, a gentle circular massage round the
navel can help in the release of gas and the baby will feel
comfortable. Gentle massaging also helps in digestion, reduces cramping
and helps in release of any excess gas.
After feed ritual. After every feed, hold
the baby upright on your arms. Let his head rest on your shoulder.
Gently tap on his back, till he burps.
Fennel water. Soak one teaspoon of fennel
seeds in a cup of water through out the night. In the morning make the
baby drink half a teaspoon of this water. Depending on age, you can
give him fennel water up to 3 times a day. In Asian countries, this is
a common home remedy for baby colic.
Herbal tea. Chamomile, ginger, catnip,
and peppermint are all excellent herbs which are perfectly safe for the
baby and you can administer up to 4 ounces of herbal tea everyday to
your child. Obviously, you are not going to replace the baby’s meals
with this as then he will be starved of nutrition.
Burping. One of the things which most
mothers forget is the importance of burping. Even during feeds, you
must try to reduce the amount of air the baby is taking in. stop the
feed every few minutes and let him burp. Then continue with the
feeding. Your baby may disapprove of this interrupted feeding routing,
but it is easier to manage the feeding than to manage a screaming
colicky baby.
Warm water. This has a magical effect on
the baby’s stomach and lets out all extra gas formed in the stomach and
the intestines. If your baby enjoys a bath, give him a warm water bath
always. Also, a warm water bottle, which the baby finds tolerable, can
be kept near his stomach to help the gas come out.
Babies react
differently to
the various types of home remedies for colic. So you will have to work
through
trial and
error methods to find out which works best for your baby, so that he
has a
colic-free existence. |
